Goodwin Estate

Hartford, Connecticut

The City of Hartford, seeking an adaptive reuse of a non-performing property in the city’s west end, selected Amenta Emma Architects and Ginsburg Development Corporation from among five Design and Development Teams to renovate the fire-ravaged mansion and develop the surrounding parcel as a residential community. The Goodwin Estate, a 63-unit condominium community located on 17 acres formerly owned by the family of Walter Lipincott Goodwin is dominated by the 15,000 sf mansion, the home of the Goodwin family from 1900 to 1950. The mansion was severely damaged by a fire in 1997 which destroyed the interior wood-framed floor and wall structure and most of the roof. The building was left open to the weather for 4 years until the design team secured the project.

Amenta Emma Architects Multi-Family group proposed a concept with the historically restored mansion as a unique focal point for the community which includes 7 units in the restored mansion and 18 additional townhouse buildings of two and four units.
