Loomis Chaffee, an independent secondary school in Windsor, CT, had very specific goals in the expansion and renovation to the well utilized but aging first floor of its school library. Most important was to preserve the wide open public views of the school’s athletic fields and wooded site. Developed in a very collaborative process with the client, Amenta Emma’s design solution creates glass enclosed group study rooms, glass enclosed instructional spaces and a variety of open student seating environments that reflect the function of the modern academic library and maintain full transparency to the exterior. New ceiling planes with new lighting organize the central open area, new main circulation desk and perimeter spaces. New finishes and furnishings throughout enhance the detailing of the building’s original modern architecture and promote flexible use of the overall space.
