The University of Saint Joseph recognized an opportunity to transform the Pope Pius XII Library into more than a repository of knowledge – it could become the campus’s front door. Visitors arriving at the suburban campus encountered no clear point of entry, while the library’s stack-dominated interior no longer reflected the collaborative, technology-rich ways students learn today. The University envisioned a destination that would welcome prospective students, support contemporary learning, and serve as a vibrant hub for campus life.

Amenta Emma was selected to lead programming, planning, and design for the 20,000 sf renovation. The process began with a series of visioning workshops that brought together students, faculty, staff, and University leadership to build consensus and surface shared aspirations. Through a data-driven programming process, the design team developed a space program that evolved through ongoing stakeholder engagement. Conceptual diagrams progressed into test-fit plans and axonometric drawings providing continuous opportunities for stakeholder engagement at every stage of design.

The project reimagines the library as a dynamic academic and social destination. A renovated library and new Learning Commons provide a range of settings for collaborative and individual study, while a new admissions suite, café, Welcome Center, and prominent public entrance create an inviting gateway to campus. Accessibility improvements and modernized building systems further support an inclusive, high-performing environment. By redefining both the arrival experience and the role of the library, the project strengthens the University’s identity while fostering connection, collaboration, and student success.

Construction is anticipated to be completed in February 2027.
