As part of UConn’s NextGen and campus construction program, Amenta Emma provided full architectural services to modernize, upgrade and expand student dining capacity to the Putnam Refectory on the Storrs campus. Built in 1969 adjacent to the Hilltop residence halls, the 42,000 sf dining hall structure has undergone a complete renovation of existing servery and seating areas, internal expansion to create increased capacity, and modifications to major building systems. With an overall project budget of $20M, construction on the project started in early May and was completed in August 2016.

The renovated made-for-millennials space nearly doubles seating by reclaiming a lower level and uniting upper and lower spaces with an iconic sculptural element. The facility employs timeless raw finishes, such as polished concrete floors, exposed ceilings, whitewashed brick walls and natural wooden farm tables. Giant original watercolor graphics of fresh fruits and vegetables reference the university’s farm-to-table reputation.

The Putnam Refectory specializes in locally sourced foods and is equipped with specialized kitchen equipment, helping UConn make the Sierra Club’s “Cool Schools” top ten schools list for the sixth year in a row.
