Amenta Emma Architects was commissioned to renovate the 3,000-square-foot, tiered classroom in MIT’s Building 34-101, a space heavily used for academic lectures and public events. The aging classroom faced challenges with poor acoustics, limited accessibility, and outdated AV capabilities. The client prioritized inclusivity by requiring wheelchair-accessible seating, along with performance improvements within a set budget, requiring a thoughtful, phased approach to design.
The design team developed renovation options ranging from minimal to ambitious, allowing the client to prioritize solutions based on importance and budget. Acoustical issues were addressed through HVAC noise mitigation and the installation of acoustical wood panels on the ceiling and rear walls, improving speech clarity while enhancing the space’s identity. Advanced AV systems were integrated to support multiple screens, lecture capture, and remote conferencing for hybrid events. Portions of the concrete tiers were removed to create dedicated wheelchair seating, and door hardware was updated to meet accessibility standards.
The renovation transformed Building 34-101 into a modern, inclusive, and acoustically optimized environment. Improved acoustics have enhanced lecture clarity, while the AV upgrades enable seamless hybrid learning and event experiences. Dedicated wheelchair seating ensures equitable access, reflecting MIT’s commitment to inclusivity. The project’s phased strategy allowed the client to align design priorities with budget goals, resulting in a functional and refreshed space that supports the university’s academic mission.
