Spring into Sustainability: Amenta Emma Achieves 57% Energy Reduction in the AIA 2030 Commitment

Steady Progress Toward Carbon Neutrality

Amenta Emma is proud to share our continued progress in the AIA 2030 Commitment. Our dedication to reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions has resulted in a steady year-over-year increase in Energy Use Intensity (EUI) reductions. This year, we have achieved an impressive 57% average EUI reduction, marking another significant step toward our ultimate goal of aligning our practice with the highest sustainability standards.

AIA 2030 Commitment target EUI reductions

Since joining the AIA 2030 Challenge in 2020, our firm has consistently advanced toward greater energy efficiency. Our data reflects a positive trend in operational carbon reduction:

  • 43% reduction in 2021
  • 52% reduction in 2022
  • 54% reduction in 2023
  • 57% reduction in 2024

While our overall average EUI reduction continues to progress, we have already completed several projects that achieve the 80% reduction metric, proving that this level of efficiency is attainable today. These successes provide a strong foundation as we work towards an internal target of 80% reduction across all projects in the next year or two, ensuring our firm remains on target with the AIA’s 2030 objectives.

Energy Modeling: A Key to Our Success

One of our major achievements this year is successfully implementing energy modeling for every project in our portfolio. This comprehensive approach ensures that all design decisions align with our sustainability goals and that we maintain high-performance building standards across our practice.

Amenta Emma’s Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality

Energy modeling has become an essential tool in our design process, allowing us to:

  • Test and validate energy-efficient strategies early in the design phase
  • Make data-driven decisions about building systems and envelope design
  • Quantify the impact of our sustainability initiatives
  • Provide clients with clear expectations about building performance

Moving forward, we aim to make this a permanent practice, helping us refine our approach to both operational and embodied carbon reductions.

The Road to Carbon Neutrality

The AIA 2030 Commitment represents just one milestone in our broader sustainability strategy. Our comprehensive approach includes:

  • Reducing fossil fuel consumption across all projects
  • Expanding onsite renewable energy generation opportunities
  • Addressing both operational and embodied carbon in our designs
  • Aligning with SE 2050 and MEP 2040 goals

By integrating these initiatives across disciplines, we continue our journey toward achieving carbon neutrality in our built projects.

Looking Ahead: Closing the Gap

We are excited about the road ahead and the opportunity to drive even greater energy efficiency within our projects. Our progress reflects not only our organizational commitment to sustainability but also the collective effort of our talented team.

With the right strategies and continued dedication, we believe it is possible to continue to achieve greater EUI reductions as a standard across all projects in the future.

Congratulations to the entire Amenta Emma team for reaching this milestone. Together, we’re not just meeting industry standards—we’re helping to set them as we work toward a more sustainable built environment.
