At Amenta Emma Architects, we believe that sustainable design is a fundamental responsibility we owe to our clients and communities towards a better future. We recognize that as an architectural firm, our impact on the built environment is significant.
In honor of Earth Day, we are proud to announce our formal commitment to the AIA Materials Pledge, an initiative developed by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) to promote responsible material specifications. By joining the AIA Materials Pledge, we are furthering our dedication to sustainable practices and fostering transparency and accountability in our design process.

What is the AIA Materials Pledge?
The AIA Materials Pledge encourages architecture firms to evaluate building products holistically to make informed and intentional material choices that promote human health, social health + equity, ecosystem health, climate health, and a circular economy. The pledge challenges firms to focus on materials that reduce carbon emissions, eliminate hazardous substances, support regenerative practices, and encourage reuse to reduce waste. By adopting these principles, we can create buildings that benefit both people and the planet.
Why Amenta Emma is Signing the Pledge
Signing the AIA Materials Pledge is a natural extension of Amenta Emma’s sustainability mission. We are committed to reducing environmental impact and supporting climate-conscious design practices. Our firm will take concrete steps, including reporting progress toward the pledge’s goals, updating our Sustainability Action Plan with a materials-specific addendum, and reviewing our progress every three years. We will work to advance the way we select and track both interior and exterior materials to align with the goals of the AIA Materials Pledge. We support the need for more data in the AEC industry and are committed to helping establish effective standards for reporting sustainability efforts. Through participating in this pledge, we will help AIA establish reliable, consistent metrics for propelling our industry forward.
We are excited about the future and look forward to sharing our progress as we work toward a more sustainable, carbon-neutral world! To learn more about the AIA Materials Pledge and the steps we are taking to support this initiative, visit the AIA Materials Pledge Starter Guide.
