Amenta Emma Volunteers in BSA Kindergarten Program

Founded by the Boston Society of Architects Foundation, the Kindergarten curriculum introduces young minds to architecture, planning, design, and construction through an architect-guided approach. The program partners with Boston and Cambridge Public Schools to integrate architectural concepts into their existing curriculum, with completed student projects showcased during a May exhibition.

Tim Reagen, AIA, from our Boston office, recently participated by visiting kindergarten students at Cambridgeport School on March 14 and April 4. “I introduced the students to architecture by explaining how Architects work and showing fundamental concepts as they relate to their ongoing class project,” Tim shares. “The children created buildings using construction paper to design their own Main Street, allowing them to apply basic design principles while engaging their creativity. Seeing their excitement about architecture was truly rewarding.”

At Amenta Emma, we believe that diversity makes us stronger. By participating in programs like the BSA Kindergarten initiative, we can inspire students at a younger age who might not otherwise have access to knowledge of the profession, creating a more diverse pipeline of talent for the future.

The BSA Kindergarten program has grown significantly since its 2017-2018 pilot, now reaching over 250 classrooms. The curriculum provides a two-part interactive lesson where volunteer architects engage with paired classrooms through presentations and hands-on activities that teach students about the various places that make up their city while developing their understanding of neighborhood planning.
