Connecticut Innovations

Transforming a 1950s bus station into a forward-looking headquarters for a venture capital firm presented a unique set of challenges. The 9,000 square foot New Haven space needed to honor the building’s industrial character while creating a dynamic, modern environment for Connecticut Innovations and the innovative technology and life sciences companies it supports. Complicating the renovation further, the existing ground slab could not be penetrated due to environmental encapsulation, requiring careful planning to incorporate electrical conduits and drains with minimal floor disturbance.

Rather than work against the building’s bones, the design team leaned into them. Exposed structure, brickwork, HVAC, and concrete floors were embraced as features, while existing skylights, high ceilings, and a long south-facing glazed wall were maximized to flood the interior with natural light. A central “main street” corridor lined with glass defines program spaces and animates the floor plan with glimpses of activity throughout. A large boardroom with a sliding glass wall opens to an adjacent café-lounge for larger gatherings, and glass-and-roof “boxes” within the larger envelope provide collaborative and huddle spaces that balance openness with privacy.

The result is a headquarters that reflects Connecticut Innovations’ energetic brand and mission. Blue and orange furnishings reinforce the firm’s identity, while a floor-to-ceiling engraved feature wall at the entrance showcases the company and its investment partners. Sustainable strategies including polished concrete floors, LED lighting with occupancy sensors, and finishes with recyclable content ensure the space is as responsible as it is inspiring.

When we set out on this journey to create a space that properly captured what we do, we wanted flexible spaces that could both function as practical workspaces and be altered to host events and networking functions. Although our requests were bountiful, Amenta Emma more than delivered!
