Waveny Care Center

Waveny LifeCare Network identified the need to expand their rehabilitation services and modernize their facility’s main entrance to better serve patients and visitors. The existing Waveny Care Center operates at more than 90 percent occupancy and can accept only a small percentage of hospital referrals for short-term rehabilitation – reflecting a broader regional demand for high-quality, post-acute care close to home. A reimagined arrival experience was also needed, one that would set a more welcoming and therapeutic tone for all who enter the facility.

Amenta Emma designed a comprehensive solution featuring a new 41,000 sf, 30-bed short-term rehabilitation addition paired with a completely reimagined main entrance. The design centers on a dramatic curved terracotta and glass façade that creates a striking architectural statement while providing practical covered drop-off and pick-up areas. The patient experience is elevated through evidence-based health and wellness design principles, including biophilic elements, warm natural materials, nature-inspired colors and patterns, and expansive windows in every private room. Dedicated education and training spaces, telemedicine capabilities, and advanced mechanical systems for optimal thermal comfort round out a facility built as much for caregivers and families as for patients.

Scheduled for completion in Spring 2028, the new rehabilitation center will enable Waveny to serve more than 400 additional patients annually – more than doubling their existing private-room capacity. The addition strengthens Waveny’s care coordination with regional hospitals and expands access to exceptional recovery services for individuals age 16 and older returning home from illness, injury, or surgery. Thoughtfully designed to support family participation in recovery, the facility reflects Waveny LifeCare Network’s longstanding commitment to compassionate, community-centered care.
