Amenta Emma Architects restored and reimagined the 1931 office building that houses the State of Connecticut’s attorney general, secretary of state, treasurer, and their staff. Located in the center of Hartford at 165 Capitol Avenue, this historic gem had fallen on hard times with air conditioning units in every window and a rabbit warren interior. Amenta Emma designers restored the monumental building’s past distinction and built on its legacy relocating the main entrance and adding a double-height lobby characterized by marble walls, a grand stair connecting the two levels, and a bridge across the upper level.
This project has been recognized by Interior Design Magazine as an honoree in their prestigious Best of Year award program. “Best of Year is the design industry’s premier design awards program,” says ID, “honoring the most significant work of the year and recognizing designers, architects, and manufacturers from around the globe.”
165 Capitol Avenue is one of three honorees in the Government/Institution category. Winners were announced at 1pm on December 9th at the Best of Design conference, held virtually this year.
